4 Lakes and Waterways Worth Paddling
From the slower pace of Sayner-Star Lake’s remote waterways to the lush backdrop of the Northwoods, there are so many reasons Sayner-Star Lake is the ideal place to go paddling! While there are 50 named lakes and 95 unnamed lakes in Sayner-Star Lake, here are four places we recommend exploring:
Partridge Lake to Ballard Lake
Located within the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, Partridge Lake boasts 235 acres of pure Northwoods beauty! The lake can be accessed from the public boat landing. Fishing is said to be great on Partridge Lake, with musky, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, and panfish most commonly found. After exploring Partridge Lake, take the portage trail to Ballard Lake and continue the fun!
White Birch, Ballard & Irving Lake Chain
With over 1,000 combined acres of water, White Birch, Ballard, and Irving Lakes are all connected to provide the perfect playground for paddlers! Take in the beauty of these tranquil lakes that are surrounded by a mix of hardwoods and pines of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. The chain is also known for excellent fall fishing and for spotting loon families!
Aurora Lake
Aurora Lake is a small, underdeveloped 94-acre lake, with a maximum depth of only 4 feet. Designated as the Aurora Lake State Natural Area in 1976, this hidden gem can be accessed by canoe for fishing and sightseeing – so be sure to bring your binoculars (and maybe your rubber boots as much of the water is surrounded by wetlands). This fertile lake is a birding haven as it's surrounded by wild rice, and is known as a place to spot bald eagles, swans, and waterfowl!
Star Lake to Plum Lake
Star Lake is not only rich in history but also in beauty. Paddle along the shore of this 1,219-acre lake and take time to explore miles of hiking trails that meander through the woods and along the shoreline. One can even find a canoe-in campsite to spend a night under the stars.
Plum Lake (1,057 acres) can be accessed from Star Lake by a portage trail, with canoe-in sites located on each end. It’s said that at sunset the lake takes on a plum color. Be sure to paddle the waters of Plum Lake at sunset and discover for yourself how the lake got its name!
