Snowmobiling in Sayner-Star Lake.jpg

This winter, take a ride to where it all began. Sayner-Star Lake is known as the birthplace of the snowmobile and for nearly a century, people have been exploring this beautiful land of lakes and forests. A trip today will take you through some of the best riding in the region and the experience is as incredible as it was in the 1920s. Here are a few details about timeless trail riding in Sayner-Star Lake.

Yesterday

A young, mechanically-inclined man named Carl Eliason invented the snowmobile here in 1924. Working in a Sayner garage, he created a “motor toboggan” that had many features that are standard in today’s snowmobiles. By today’s standards, it was a modest machine; it was powered by a 2.5 horsepower outboard boat motor and had skis controlled by ropes. But the motor toboggan was revolutionary and helped launch a world of winter recreation.

Today

Sayner-Star Lake is a Northwoods snowmobile destination. You can ride the same country that Eliason traveled in the 1920s. It’s beautiful country—with snow-draped forests, pristine frozen lakes, and scenic winding trails. The trails are carefully maintained by the Sayner-Star Lake Barnstormers, the club that created the original Vilas County trail system. You’ll find plenty of roadside dining establishments and lodging near the trails. Some lodging is directly on the trail. Use our interactive map to find the perfect place.

Sayner-Star Lake is an ideal base for a snowmobile getaway. Vilas County has more than 600 miles of trails and includes trails that will take you virtually anywhere in the county.
