Kate Reichl Captures the Night Skies of Sayner-Star Lake
Growing up in the Northwoods, with a lack of light pollution, is where my interest in outer space started. Over the years I realized that I wanted to be able to capture what I was seeing, and share it with others who live where you can’t see the stars.
Capturing special places of the Northwoods under our dark night skies shows a different side to this area. When photographing historical objects like the old bait shop and the railroad crossing, it’s beautiful to see these things under the stars. It’s also a quiet way to view that these pieces of history will never change, even under an ever-changing universe.
All of these photos were taken around the Sayner area throughout all seasons. The nightscapes of Sayner/Star Lake are unique, treasured by locals and adored by visitors. I will always love capturing our little corner of the Northwoods under the expansive night sky.
Kate Reichl is a photographer and filmmaker working in the Northwoods. She graduated from The University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee where she studied film and photography. In photography her main focus is on nightscapes and the night sky, in film her main focus is on documentary style films.
Kate recently returned from Iceland, where she had been living while working on a documentary about avalanche survivors in the town of Ísafjörður. Here she was also able to work on astrophotography and capturing the northern lights. She will be returning to Iceland this year as a guest speaker at an international film festival.
Her love for astrophotography started at home on Plum Lake, where she was always fascinated with the night sky. She wanted to be able to capture that beauty and share it with others who aren’t lucky enough to experience it in person. After college she returned to the Northwoods to continue working on and sharing her art. Learn more about her work by visting her website and Instagram.
